Hello everybody here in this wonderful forum and all visitors that may be surf our precious forum. It's my honor that I put a topic in this great forum and I'll enrich English section as much as I can , just because I love this forum , all members and English language. Actually I'm not an English teacher and don't have experience in teaching but I want to put here all what I know about English grammar that I believe in grammar importance and rarely to slang. In my opinion folks who like to just deal and communicate with foreigners don't navigate in grammar books meantime don't abandon , but who like English as a language and literature will have desire to navigate in grammar books and enjoy every word ,meaning, sentence and information .Again my brothers and sisters I'm not professor so if you find any mistake in ( spelling ,grammar or better expression ) tell me as soon as possible .I'm ready to be criticized from you because I want to learn more and more from my mistakes and you.

The topic here will discuss (If statement - Conditional sentences - If clauses) or any title you like to say .May be some of the surfers say why he put this grammar here and it's repeated and common everywhere , simply here you will find big difference because I will summarize many books moreover quizzes and questions with answer key or detailed answers.

IN BRIEF

Zero conditional

Form
If + present simple ------> present simple
Example
If I go to bed late I always

l tired the next day
If you cook vegetables for too long they taste so awful
Use
To talk about things that always, often, sometimes happen if something else happens
Or simply we use it when we talk about facts

One conditional

Form
If + present simple ----->future
Example
If it's hot tomorrow we will go to the beach
Use
We use this case if there's possibility that the event might happen
In this example it's possible that tomorrow be hot
(Not fact but possible)

Second conditional

Form
If + Past simple tense-------> (would or could or might) + infinitive
Example
If I was rich I could buy a yacht
If peter got that job we'd move to Edinburgh (we'd = we would)
Use
We use this tense when we talk about impossible
I'm not rich and I'll never buy yacht
Peter lost this job
Another example to show the meaning, if you are with someone ill and suffer from his disease you can say "If I were a doctor, I would help you". Here you are not a doctor but you just wish

Third conditional

Form
If + past perfect ------ > (Would or could or might) + (have or has) +P.P
Example
If I had worked harder I would have passed the exam
Use
Simply when we express regret about the past

Hello again my brothers and sisters
For "Zero Conditional", as you see it's simple and easy so we will focus a little on it that we want to enrich our topic and make it comprehensive as much as we can

As we say before"Zero Conditional" in general talk about facts

General examples
If you press the button, the machine switches off
If you go in the best seats, you get a free drink
Water freezes, if temperature falls below zero
If he is angry, his face always goes bright red
If you put your mind in a savings account, you get ten percent interests
If the microphone is not working, you can not hear what he is saying
The radio doesn't work, if the batteries are flat
If there are only a few students, we usually close one of the classes
The machine does not work, if it doesn't have enough oil
If a balloon is filled with hot air, it rises
If water boils, it changes into steam

This is for intermediate and advanced levels but for proficiency we can rank or divide the past examples into two parts which also at final indicate to what we say before (talk about facts)

For instructions - Naturally instructions it shows facts
If you select reverse gear, the car goes backwards
If the camera is on, a red light appears

For general truths - facts
If he has got no money, he doesn't go eat
If he sees you, he always says hello

As we say before the zero conditional is used to talk about things which are always true -- scientific facts, general truths, and so on

We put here much quoted examples for you my dear reader to confirm understanding, enrich your vocabulary , training you ,………………..and for analyzing the sentence formation

If you cross an international date line, the time changes
If you go 10 meters under water, the pressure increases to two atmospheres
Phosphorus burns if you expose it to air
If you press this button, you get black cof

When you fly budget airline, you don't expect to get anything to eat
Unless you need a lot of leg-room, don't pay the extra for first class
If people don't eat or drink, eventually they die.
If I give my dog a bone, it buries it
My parents get angry if I come home late
If heat is transferred, it moves from a higher temperature to a lower temperature
Press the button if you want a receipt
If you want to leave a message, speak after the tone
For further information, please have a look at the list below
If you freeze water, it becomes a solid.
Plants die if they don't get enough water.
If my husband has a cold, I usually catch it.
If public transport is efficient, people stop using their cars.
If you mix red and blue, you get purple.
If Bill phones, tell him to meet me at the cinema
Ask Pete if you're not sure what to do
Take an umbrella if it rains
If you

l sick, see a doctor.
If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen

We have here 2 notes

First

we have two kind of clauses

If clause ---> If + subject + simple present verb
main clause ---> subject + simple present verb

For example

If clause ---------------------------------------------------- main clause
If you heat water to 100 degrees,------------------------ it boils

Then we'll reverse the previous example

Main clause------------------------------------------------------------If clause
it boils-------------------------------If you heat water to 100 degrees

Second

If the "if" clause comes first, a comma is usually used. If the "if" clause comes second, there is no need for a comma

One conditional

We use this case when we describe what will or won't (probably) happen
In order to realize and recognize the meaning of this sentence we should know the real meaning of probably
Probably means : Seems reasonably true, factual, to be expected, without much doubt or most likely

Analyzed examples

Standard

If I see Andrew at the meeting, I will give him your message

If I see (Present simple) Andrew at the meeting, I will give (Future simple) him your message
To talk about something that is quite likely to happen in the future. It’s very possible that I will see Andrew at the meeting, in which case I’ll give him your message. The condition is quite likely to be fulfilled

If you drop it, it'll break ---OR--- It'll break if you drop it
If you come at ten, we'll be ready---OR---We'll be ready if you come at ten
If you phone me, I'll pick up at the park---OR---I'll pick up at the park if you phone me

Examples on standard case

If the train is late, we'll walk
She'll call you if she has time
If it costs too much, I'll buy a smaller one
If the doctor can't see me, I'll go somewhere else
If the class is full, we will find another one
What will we do if the taxi doesn't come?
Will you phone me if there are any problems? --> question
I'll ask peter if I see him tomorrow
I'll go next week if I can get a train ticket
If he sees me here, he'll be really angry
Mary will be worried if you don't come to the airport
If it snows this winter, we'll go skiing
I'll lend them some money if they ask me
If you visit oxford, you'll see some interesting old buildings
If Helen passes all her exams, we're going to buy her a big present
If we book this holiday, we'll be lying on a warm beach in two weeks' time
If they win this next match, they'll have won every match in the season
If you need any help, call me
If you phone me after 12 o'clock, I might be in bed
If they don't eat, they can't have any ice-cream

However we can also use present continuous, present perfect simple, present perfect continuous, can, should

If he’s still waiting for you, he’ll be very angry
If you’re coming out with us tonight, you’ll need to be ready 7 o’clock
If Rob’s received your letter, I’m sure he’ll phone you today
If it’s been raining in the night, you’ll have to wear Wellingtons
If I can finish work early, I’ll come and help you
If I should see him, I’ll tell him the good news
If the weather clears, we'll go for a walk
If it is fine tomorrow, we'll go for a picnic
If it rains next weekend, we won't be able to plant vegetables
If he is leaving at 6 o'clock, I will ask him to give me a lift
If she has driven all that way since the morning, she'll be tired and hungry
If they have been working all after noon, they will probably need a cup of tea
If I couldn't finish the job this weekend, I'll try to get it done during the week
If John is picked for the team, he'll be boasting about it for weeks
If you have forgotten to phone, they'll have to go without you
If we stay in this flat till May, we'll have been living here for twenty years

When we use if + should, the condition is less likely to be fulfilled
The main clause usually has the verb in future with will/shall
However we can also use: 'be going to' future, future continuous, future perfect, imperative, can/could, may/might, should/ought to, must

"If + should" instead of "If + present"
"If + should" instead of "If + present" makes the condition more doubtful or very polite:

If you should see him, please give him this message.
If she should ask you, please don't tell her anything.
If he should phone you, please say I'm out.
If the temperature should fall, turn up the heating.
If you should receive a letter, let me know.
If you should go out, get me a paper.
Imperative + (and/or) +clause
We can use the imperative in place of an "if-clause" to comment, threaten, request, etc.
We follow the imperative with "and" in place of "if-clauses" in the affirmative:
If you fail to pay, they'll cut off the electricity.
Fail to pay and, they'll cut off electricity.
If you ask me nicely, I'll mend it for you.
Ask me nicely and, I'll mend it for you.
If you crash my car, I'll never forgive you.
Crash my car and, I'll never forgive you.
If you work late tonight, I'll pay you well.
Work late tonight and, I'll pay you well.
We follow the imperative with "or" in place of "if-clauses" in the negative:
If you don't stop borrowing money, you'll be in trouble.
Stop borrowing money, or you'll be in trouble.
If you don't hurry, you'll be late.
Hurry or, you'll be late.
If you don't take a taxi, you'll miss your train.
Take a taxi or, you'll miss your train.
If you don't stop shouting, I'll slap you.

Sorry Mostafa but I 'm here again . Once again thank you for your effort.It seems that you like grammer too much.No doubt grammer is an important area in studying English and you can get easily a quick response whether the person you talking with is educated or not from the way he uses the grammer in talking or in writing. I like you to carry on explaining the grammer rules and to develpe your skills in this section but do not forget that English is not only grammer. For me and for any body wants to be good in E, they have to develpe also the other skills. Listening ,vocabulary,reading and writing. Your English looks nice and you have a good way in teaching , and my recommendation is just for remindig myself and for helping .i

First of all I'd like to thank you for reading my writing, replying and advising me …. I wonder why you say sorry in the beginning of your participation, here's a public forum and anybody can share moreover I welcomed you before that I see your English is better than me.
I don't like grammar too much, but very much.

For developing my skills

In listening: this is really tired me a lot and I still suffering till now it performs a weak point

For vocabulary: as you know this point is endless, all ESL will understand and memorize vocabulary till last minute in their life without satisfaction. I write before about prefix and suffix and now I need to update this writing and put it here

For reading and writing: I'm trying
I know I'm a little bit grammarians
What a great honor for me that you see my English is nice.
I'm waiting more support, help, advices and participations. YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME
